Club News – May Update

APRIL / MAY  UPDATE
LAST PATROL
Avalon Beach SLSC has signed off for another season. Congratulations and thank you to all of our patrolling members who have kept the beach safe from last September until today. No lives have been lost and there have been a total of 80 rescues, 100 first aid treatments and 450 preventative measures.
AUSSIE SILVER FOR ANTIQUESThe Antiques Surf Boat team achieved our best result at the Aussies this year, winning a Silver Medal in the 180 years Female Surf Boat race.  Congratulations on yet another great result to Kerry McEwan, Kate Munro, Beverley Tilbury and Donna Wishart. Swept by Nathan Wellings.
ANZAC DAY MARCH
The Anzac Day celebrations in Avalon Beach are the second biggest outside the CBD.  It is a real celebration of community spirit and honours the legacy and freedoms gained through the sacrifice of our forebears.  A small but dedicated group of Nippers, Active and Life Members represented the Club in the march.  Let’s have a stronger representation next year.

IRB RACING KICKS OFF
The patrol season may be finished, but that just means the IRB competition season is kicking off with the first carnival this weekend at Caves Beach.  If you are interested in competing this year or next, contact our IRB competition manager Peter Akehurst.  If you would like to find out what its all about, or train for your IRB Crew Award, come down to a training session at 7:30am  on non-carnival Sundays.  Good luck to the whole team, but especially our new novice team of Todd Barber and Zac Dale who have been putting in a lot of training hours for their first carnival.
CLUB PHOTO
Thanks to all who showed up for the Club Photo, and for Tim Hixson for balancing precariously on his ladder, missing out yet again on being in the shot, and taking such a great image.
HANDS UP
On Sunday we had a thank you dinner and drinks for the committee members, patrol captains and trainers who put in countless hours helping to run the club.  It was a great night, but it would be even better with a few new faces next year.  We have 333 general members (nipper parents) and 212 active members and so far nobody new has put their hand up to help out next year!  If you can help out in any capacity, please let me know.  It doesn’t need to be a huge commitment, and no experience is necessary.  We would particularly like to find some Club members who could get involved in the organisation of Carols by the Sea.  Come and be part of a great team.
GOLD IS THE NEW BRONZE
According to Mike Stanley-Jones, “Gold is the new Bronze for all Avalon Surf Clubbies.  Lets all look at upskilling ourselves, grabbing a few of the free awards that SLSA has to offer and make ourselves better. The club needs it.  For those of you who like the beach there’s Advanced Resus, Basic Beach management and Senior First Aid.  For those who feel they could complete their Gold, they can join a bunch of like-minded souls and train-up for an assessment in December 2016.  No matter if you only get three quarters of the pathway to Gold – the extra training will make you feel great and your club will appreciate it immensely.”  Email [email protected] if you’d like any additional information.  Below is a list of gold medallion holders from Avalon Beach SLSC.  Will you be next on the list?

BOOMERANG BAGS
Boomerang Bags is a non-for -profit initiative to help free Avalon Beach of single use plastic bags.  Over the past 15 months local residences have been busy sewing and collecting bags which are labelled Borrow and Bring Back.  These bags are being housed in 7 boxes around Avalon for shoppers to Borrow and Bring Back. This initiative results in lessening the impact of plastic pollution entering our beautiful beaches, parks and waterways throughout our community. Each Boomerang Bag used will save 500 to 600 plastic bags being used in a year. More information is available atwww.boomerangbags.org, and also on Facebook. Boomerang Bags Avalon will launch on Saturday, 25th June 11am on the steps of Avalon Recreational Centre.

HAVE A LAUGH
There will be a night of laughs in the Club Lounge this Saturday at 7pm supporting Barrenjoey High School.  Tickets are only $30 and available here.  If you haven’t been to one of these events, you should.  Highly recommended!
MEMBER PROFILE – TERRY BARBER
“Barbs” joined the club in 1979, the same year he was awarded his Bronze Medallion, so he really is a part of the furniture.  If you have done your SRC, Bronze, First Aid or IRB Course, you have probably been taught by Terry.  There is not much about Surf Life Saving that Terry doesn’t know.  Last year he achieved a 30 year service award.  He is one of our trainers for Bronze and is an Assessor and Examiner for IRB awards.  As a surf official he was a powercraft coordinator at the Aussies last year, and has a vast experience in the management of surf carnivals.  Terry is our water safety officer for events such as the Surf Swim and Lion Island challenge, and also helps to manage the IRB competition team.  Terry is generally found either on the beach, tinkering with an engine in the IRB room, fixing the ATV or something else,  He is rather fond of both a joke and a beer, and not necessarily in that order.  Terry’s official title on the Board of Management is Deputy Director of Life Saving and Education and Beach Vehicle Officer.  I really don’t know how the club would function without Barbs.  Both his son Todd and daughter Amelia have followed their father into IRB racing, and are representing the Club this year.  I would like to thank his lovely wife Megan for sharing him so much.  Thank you Barbs for your enthusiasm, passion, humour and constant dedication.
