Surf Boat Rowing

Surf Boat rowing is not for the faint-hearted.  You need to be fit, strong, trust your crew, and don’t mind a wedgie!  A surfboat crew is made up of five members, four rowers and a sweep who stands at the back of the boat and steers.  It takes some guts to get out through choppy conditions or huge sets, turn around and catch a wave back to shore but our “boaties” treat each other like family and all new rowers nurtured and trained in the art of Surf Boat racing.

Our Surf Boat crews race in local, state, national and world competitions and our Club has a proud history of success at these events.  Our Women’s Masters crew ‘The Antiques’ won all of these events in 2015, making it the 5th gold medal in a row at the Australian titles and backed up with a gold medal at the World Championships in 2016 and World Masters in 2017.  Our U23 Men’s crew “The Pinkies” also won the World Championships in 2016 and in 2018 our first ever Female Surf Boat gold medal was won by the U19 crew ‘The Chanels’ in the inaugural U19 Female final at the Australian titles in WA and joined by ‘The Bandits’ winning gold in the Reserve Female final.

We thank our Surf Boat sponsors, Brown Bros. Skip Bins, Active Tree Services, Voss Store, Crossfit Avalon Beach, Eco Downunder and our IRB Sponsor, Avalon Beach RSL Club, for their valuable support.
