Prior to becoming a Surf Lifesaver you must complete your Bronze Medallion. Over an 8 week course, typically held with mid-week theory and weekend practical application, you will be provided with the skills and knowledge to be able to participate in Life Saving operations and join a patrol team at Avalon Beach.
At the completion of your course you will have gained a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate II in Public Safety – Aquatic Rescue).
Course Structure & Duration
Duration: Approximately 8 weeks with 2 weekly sessions typically held each Sunday 11.00am – 1.00pm (normally at Avalon Beach) and either Tuesday or Wednesday evening 7.00pm – 9.00pm (at Avalon Beach SLSC). Please wear clothes suitable for water activities and bring goggles etc for swimming. You must be at least 15 years of age to complete your Bronze Medallion. Course Overview available here
The prerequisite pool swim requires participants to swim 400m (16 laps of Avalon Beach pool) in nine (9) minutes or less. This swim will be conducted prior to enrolment in the course. Surf Life Saving Australia regulations require all members in training for the Bronze Medallion to wear a Hi Viz fluoro vest when training in the ocean. This vest can be fluoro yellow, green, pink or red.
Bronze Medallion Course Fees – 2020/21 season
All course participants must become members of Avalon Beach SLSC. Membership fee is an additional $80 if aged 18+ . Membership is free for members aged 15-17.
